Residential garage door openers come in three basic types that include a chain, screw, or belt drive system. Of the three, the belt drive is the quietest and requires the least maintenance, with the chain type at the opposite end. Opener motors come in either one-third or one-half horsepower models, with a better warranty usually included with the latter models.
Openers come with remote controls, usually kept in the vehicle and with the ability to open up to three garage doors or two garage doors and a gate. In addition, garage doors can be opened via a keyless entry pad attached just outside the garage door, and a wall button is generally located inside the garage near the entry to the house for the ability to open and close the door from inside. These inside wall buttons will usually also control the light attached to the garage door opener and will allow for locking out the opener for extended absences.
